About Us
Who is DBC?
A dwelling of distinction requires a dedicated team willing to invest a lot of hard work and personal attention in its creation.
Distinction Building Contractors ("DBC") seeks to achieve just that, and have over many years gathered a capable and diligent team.
Brendon has been living and working on the West Coast for 27 years. Liza came to the West Coast 18 years ago, and has been assisting in building DBC with Brendon since then. Arthur joined the team four years ago and has been bringing an invaluable skillset on board.
Honesty and reliability are what best describes our character.
We understand that building a house can be a costly experience, and do our best to offer our services at below market-related or at market-related costs, taking care to offer affordable prices without compromising on quality.
We handle each project with absolute integrity, taking special care to keep your property as clean and uncluttered as possible during the building process, not to waste material, and to invest our energy into a quality result.
We have many years experience in the construction industry, with special attention directed at the construction of typical "West Coast Fisherman" dwellings as well as the more complicated homes found within our gated villages.
"Unlike most building contractors, we do not rely on subcontractors to do our work, but in fact do everything ourselves with our dedicated long-standing team. This ensures the delivery of a quality dwelling. Our long-standing team takes great care in building a home, and it is a labour of love."
Best industry and professional practices are employed in the building of your home.
We employ a qualified Land Surveyor to set out all our sites and buildings prior to the commencement of our projects. The Land Surveyor will also visit the site at least twice during the course of the project to gauge progress and regulatory conformation in respect of the allowable height.
A qualified Engineer is employed in the capacity as Competent Person prior to the commencement of any project, and this engineer will do the necessary soil classification tests for NHBRC enrolment, do all compaction tests and roof inspection and certification, and design any concrete decks, beams, and staircases.
Our houses are NHBRC certified, and we comply with insurance-requirements as set out by many of the gated villages and developments in our area.
The members of our team receive competitive pay rates and many additional benefits, and we encourage a hands-on-approach and skills upgrade.
The seven most important benefits when choosing DBC for your next project, are:
- First and foremost - we are affordable. We offer a quality building service at an affordable price. Ask us for a free no-obligation quotation.
- We pride ourselves on our quality of work, our reputation and our integrity.
- We only take on at most one or two projects at a time. Our motto is to concentrate on one dwelling or job in its entirety. This ensures that we are able to maintain the quality of the work as our attention is not spread between many sites. We are not in the business of mass-producing houses.
- Unlike most building contractors, we do not rely on subcontractors to do our work, but in fact do everything ourselves with our dedicated long-standing team. This ensures the delivery of a quality dwelling. Our long-standing team takes great care in building a home, and it is a labour of love.
- As business owners we take on a very hands-on approach and are physically involved in the activities, rather than taking a conventional "overseer-only" role. In this way, we can ensure that no shortcuts are taken during the work process and that all construction is done meticulously and according to set rules and regulations.
- Diligent and consistent presence by Brendon on his sites during working hours.
- Greater transparency via our online progress tracking system. Track the building progress of your dwelling online with this website. This service was created with transparency in mind so that you as the client can always assure yourself of the progress and quality of construction of your home, even if you are not able to physically be on-site at all times.
The West Coast is a vast region with a varied landscape, from the almost desert-like scenery of the Namaqualand, the pristine Langebaan lagoon,
and adjacent West Coast National Park, to the clear waters and white beaches of Paternoster.

Why build a dwelling of distinction?
It is no secret that building a home is one of the most costly investments that can be made. If a dwelling is built properly, its investment and return potential is far greater than a house that has been put together in an unskilled and shoddy manner.
Cheapest quotation versus the more expensive quotation from a builder with a proven track record? It is a big possibility that you will save money in the long-term in choosing the more expensive quotation.
The building industry is littered with potential pitfalls. Choosing the right builder can be a difficult task. A potential homeowner generally chooses a builder who has submitted the lowest quotation but seldom tries to ascertain whether the lower price will indeed not result in a much higher cost. Too often have we heard horror stories of bad workmanship, builders that disappeared after receiving payment, structural defects that had to rectified at a much greater cost, houses having to be repaired mere months after completion, etc. Not to mention the headaches and grey hairs experienced by the would-be homeowners who have to battle and contend with these setbacks - definitely not the joyful and exciting experience which building your own home should've been!
You should love your newly-built home - not despise it.
At the end of the day it would have been prudent to choose the builder with the higher quotation and the proven track record, the builder who takes pride in its work and will complete the job with absolute attention to detail and quality, within an acceptable timeframe. The slightly higher price asked by the quality builder is often negligible if considering the costs and energy saved in rectifying problems that could possibly arise from an inferior construction.
